Project Two:

Replacing a damaged Soakaway.

The site:

Somewhere in the Shropshire countryside.

The Problem:

The soakaway, blocked by tree roots after many years service, was no longer capable of clearing the waste water from the septic tank.

The Solution:

Replace the length of damaged soakaway, and add an inspection cover to allow the pipe to be cleared if the need arises.

The route of the new soakaway across the garden

The soakaway runs toward the end of the garden, following the line indicated above.

A new soakaway pipe

This is a length of soakaway pipe, clearly showing the drainage holes.
The pipe is laid with the holes facing downwards.

The partially filled soakaway trench

The soakaway is laid into a gravel-filled trench, with a covering membrane
to protect the gravel from filling with soil.

Levelling the soakaway

The pipe is carefully laid to ensure a steady 'fall' away from the tank.

Perforated soakaway pipe, laid in a gravel filled trench.

The soakaway trench, almost complete.

The inspection cover, to allow access to the drain.

An inspection point allows access for maintenance of the soakaway system.

The start of the soakaway system

The start of the soakaway, above the original interceptor tank.

Specialist machinery helps in a confined space.

This motorised barrow was used to transfer stone to the trench,
allowing work to progress rapidly despite the limited access available.

Motorised barrow.

Filling the soakaway trench

Filling the end of the soakaway trench with gravel.

The Result:

A fully-working sewage system, that will, thanks to our engineers care and skill, last for many years.
